Roberto Juarez was born in Chicago in 1952, to a Mexican father and a Puerto Rican mother. His move to San Francisco in 1973 to study at the San Francisco Art Institute was the beginning of his career. In 1979 he moved to New York and by December 1980, he had his first solo exhibition at the Robert Miller Gallery and was included in the New Wave New York exhibition at P.S. 1 in February 1981. In 1996 Juarez received a one-year fellowship at the American Academy in Rome.
His artwork has been exhibited throughout the United States including Aspen, CO; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO, Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Florida; Ball State University, Muncie, IN; American Academy of Arts and Letters' Invitational Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture, New York, NY and Monterrey, Mexico. As visiting artist in 2007 Juarez created a series of monprints in STUDIO-f that led him to a breakthrough in his paintings. His synthesis in paintings of geometric images gave his work a new symbolism. The new work being generated uses his repertoire of images in the continuing method of layering media that create a rich tapestry of visual illusions.
Juarez works in his studio in Canaan New York and New York City.
