STUDIO F

20th Anniversary of Studio F Catherine Porter was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941.

She studied from 1959 to 1961 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, receiving a B.A. degree in 1963 from Boston University. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate in 1984 from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

How abstract imagery acquires meaning has always seemed to fascinate Porter. Her interest in the way an image is framed leads her to a "within and without" field where remnants of geometric shapes create a tension on the plane. Whether in values of Black and white or with rich color, her pieces speak the language of rhythm.

Porter was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1972. She has been included in several Whitney Biennials and one and two person exhibitions throughout the states and the Knoedler Gallery, London. Her work is in major collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Fogg, Cambridge, MA, Museum of Modern Art, NY, Whitney Museum of Art, NY, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Tel Aviv Museum in Jerusalem.

Monorpints created by Porter in STUDIO-f used elements of portals - shapes and colors overlapping, implying dimension. Some of the 1991 STUDIO-f series monoprints are constructed of black, grey, and white flat shapes; others layer monochrome and/or analogous colors to create a rich surface. Some smaller colorful geometric shapes that fill the space balance the geometric shapes.

Porter presently lives and works in Madison, WI.
