Closely associated with color field painting in the 60s and 70s, and the inventor of the subgenre 'the draped stained canvas', Gillian has created a secure niche in the history of contemporary art. His work in the 90s moved to external, internal expression. Giliam superimposes layers of color while allowing light to radiate from the original surfaces. Moving shapes of opaque and transparent color that explode in a seemingly limitless dimension creates a high energy.
Gilliam's work in major collections throughout the world including the Corcoran and the Hirshhorn in Washington, DC, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the MOMA and the Whitney in NY City, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate in London, and the Musée d'Art de la ville de Paris. A recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Gilliam has taught at Carneggie Mellon, the University of Maryland and Maryland Institute College of Art.
Most recently Sam Gilliam: A retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, made possible by the generous support of the Women's Committe of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Ellen and Gerry Segal, and the Firends of Corcoran. Originated at the Corcoran Gallery of Artin DC, traveled to Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY, Telafair Museum of Art, Savannah, GA, and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX. |
