Sedrick Huckaby was born in 1975 in Fort Worth. He began painting quilts as backdrops for portraits. Over time, he began to focus on the quilts alone as artful messengers, telling stories of family, ancestral legacy and also of spiritual concepts through draping folds and connected patches. His most recent works are typified by heavy layers of paint, an interplay of light and shadow, and a sense of soft texture that defies the hardness of the thick oil on the canvas. Today, "I continue my large-scale paintings in my Fort Worth home studio, which I built with my father and brother. It is in a house next door to the one that I grew up in. It has been an inspiration to come home to find my childhood neighborhood after being given the opportunity to study and refine my art at Boston University and Yale and then to travel all over the world. The art I was doing was - and is - about the place I was from. So I decided to come back. I am married to Letitia, who is also an artist, specializing in photo-based art. We have two children, Sonny, and Lujah."
Huckaby received a B.F.A from Boston University and an M.F.A. from Yale University. Winner of numerous awards including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, his work can be found in distinguished permanent collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Sedrick Huckaby’s works of art are exhibited in galleries and privates collections across the U.S. Huckaby teaches at the University of Texas, Arlington, TX. He is represented by Valley House Gallery, Dallas, Texas.
